Week 3: Jan 28, 2024

Greetings,

Dr. Li, Chenyang, and I wanted to provide you with an update for this coming week.  I’m sorry about the length of this email, but there is quite a bit of information to convey.

Our plan will be to meet in EB 1538 with the environmental/hydrology students as we did last week from 3-4 PM.  Plan to come with your draft conceptual site plan, questions, and a draft of Memo1. We’ll focus our discussion on the tasks that will need to be accomplished and a path forward that ensures a fair division of labor.

If you have not done so, you should review the CMS client data & needs statement. It is on D2L in the Project Specific Resources folder.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to get any additional information about water and energy usage at the Willow St. site. I was able to obtain the Phase I ESA and have posted it in the Hydrology and ENE folder. The information may only be used for the Project, and may not be otherwise redistributed or publicized without Consumers Energy’s prior written consent. Consumers Energy is providing this information “as is” and any recipient of the information agrees not to rely on it in any way. Consumers Energy will not be responsible for any use of the information or any liability arising out of it (including any obligation to provide compensation for or to use any product created during the Project).

We will then be in the computer lab (location TBA) from 4-5:50 PM where Dr. Li will give a crash course on the hydrology software you will need for the project. We would like all 28 of you to attend that session.  While you may not be the one principally involved in modeling the hydrology on site, having an appreciation of the software will benefit your entire team.

The following week, we will again spend the first hour (3-4 PM) in EB 1538 and the second hour in the computer lab, where Chenyang will give a crash course on ReOpt, which you will use for modeling solar array systems.  This could also include solar pumps and pathway lightening. Again, we would like all 28 of you to attend that session.

Dr. Li, Chenyang, and I will also meet on Wednesday to review your memos. I’ve added a DropBox on D2L for submission of memos.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Dr. Masten

P.S. I mentioned the detention pond that is part of the Daniel Drain system.  Below are links to photos taken during construction. I’ll try to get some additional photos showing the forebay and constructed pond. The third link is to a presentation about the project.
